Your Questions Answered

Can anyone apply to be registered for a home?
As long as you are aged 16 or over and are not subject to immigration control you can register to live in a Gentoo Sunderland home.

What will I have to do to be considered for a home?
You need to register with us. You can do this by filling in a registration form over the phone, in person or via the internet. You will need to sign your form at some point. You will be sent a letter confirming your details and the date you registered.

Will people continue to be excluded from the register?
Yes, if we are satisfied they are guilty of behaviour that makes them unsuitable to be a tenant.

I have applied to move already, what happens to my existing application?
All of the details we currently hold about your application will be automatically registered on to the Choice Based Lettings database. You don't need to do anything.

How will I know what properties are available?
We will advertise properties in each housing office, in the local newspapers and in the property centre. Each property advertised will have labels which outline who the property is suitable for.

Will all vacant properties be advertised?
Properties that are not advertised will be held for a number of management moves for people in any of the following 5 categories: Homeless, Statutory, Decants, Mobility and Management reasons.

What happens when I see a property I am interested in?
You will need to express you interest in that property. You can do this in person, at any housing office, at the property centre, over the phone or via the internet. There is no limit to the number of properties you can express your interest in.

How long will I have to express my interest?
Each advertised property will be available for a 5 day period, allowing you to express an interest at any point during that time.

What happens when the advert closes?
If you are successful you will be contacted within five days once the advert is closed.

What happens if I don't make expressions of interest?
It will be up to you to actively find a home. Gentoo Sunderland will no longer come to you with offers of specific homes unless you try to make expressions of interest at the property centre, over the phone, at any housing office or via the internet. There is no limit to the number of properties you can express an interest in.

If I am successful will I be able to view the property before accepting the offer?
Yes. We will arrange a convenient time for you to view the property and if you accept the offer we will arrange for you to sign your tenancy agreement.

Will I be penalised if I decide to refuse the offer?
No, you will remain registered and will still be able to express interest in any other suitable properties that become available.

If I am assessed as homeless will I get a choice of a home?
Yes. Anyone assessed as homeless will also be able to express their interest in the advertised properties.

What about people who need more support than others?
A network of support agencies will provide support and assistance to vulnerable people. This includes Social Services, health agencies and voluntary organisations. We will accept expressions of interest on someone's behalf from any of these agencies who are part of the network. Each agency will be sent a list of available properties on a regular basis.

Are my personal details kept confidential?
When you apply for housing you are asked to sign a declaration giving consent for Gentoo Sunderland to share your information with partner housing associations. The information provided on this form will be on computer and may be used for the prevention and detection of fraud and any other crime, but other than enquiries from other agencies like the Police, your information will always be totally confidential.
